In terms of the overall story (no spoilers intended), Phantasy Star Nova is a completely isolated adventure that does not tie back in unlike the other sidestory games (Phantasy Star Online 2es and IDOLA Phantasy Star Saga). Basically there are 3 PSU Games for PC right now: - Phantasy Star Universe, which is offline only (needs a patch for that) - Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus, which is also offline only (needs a patch) - Phantasy Star Universe Clementine, which is online only so basically you need one of the 2. However, you do spend time capturing large monsters and calling them up to fight enemies so that was pretty fun. Phantasy Star Nova was built with the original two-button control scheme in mind so you do not have access to three-button mode or its conveniences so all melee and ranged classes focus on the Photon Art Sequence (pressing the same button successively goes to the next attack in order) whereas the Force and techniques in general get to be used on-demand.
However, the gameplay to me does not age well compared to how games like Monster Hunter would have (you can still play games like Monster Hunter Generations and walk over to Monster Hunter World and not feel so disoriented). There are things I liked such as having the classes unlock skills that you can equip to a "Skill Board" so you can take aspects of other classes and combine them (such as equipping weapons from another class, equipping stances, using stat boosts, and the likes). I started it as my first Phantasy Star experience and liked it quite a bit but it is very hard to go back to after having played through Phantasy Star Online 2 with all of the changes they made afterwards. In terms of its actual gameplay, it is like a snapshot of how the game used to be during Episode 3 and Episode 4.
